What Are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are enlarged and swollen veins (also called varicose) around the outside of the anus or in the lower rectum. The rectum is the last part of the bowel and leads to the anus, the opening at the end of the bowel where fecal matter leaves the body.

Diagnosis & Treatment of Hemorrhoids

If your hemorrhoids produce only mild discomfort, your doctor might suggest over-the-counter creams, ointments, suppositories or pads. These products contain ingredients such as witch hazel, or hydrocortisone and lidocaine, which can temporarily relieve pain and itching.

Hemorrhoid Surgery

Hemorrhoid surgery is safe and effective most of the time. But you`ll still need to eat a high-fiber diet, avoid constipation, and take care of your bottom to help prevent new hemorrhoid flare-ups.
